Total Views : 26 | Published Date : April 11, 2025Located just 8 kilometers north of Barisal city, Lakutia Zamindar Bari stands as a testament to Bangladesh's rich history and architectural significance. Established in the early 18th century by Rajchandra Roy, the grandson of Rupchandra Roy—the founder of the Lakutia Jamindar lineage—this estate once served as a vibrant cultural hub during the British colonial era.
Lakutia Jamindar Bari is more than just an old mansion. It's a window into the past. The estate features multiple temples, including five that remain largely intact, showcasing the Atchala and Shikhara architectural styles. A notable temple was erected by Pankaj Kumar Roy Chowdhury in memory of his parents, Surendra Kumar and Pushparani Roy Chowdhury.
From Barisal's Nathullabad Bus Terminal, travelers can reach Lakutia Jamindar Bari by taking an auto-rickshaw or tempo to Baburhat, it will cost approximately BDT 20~25 per person. Or, alternatively anyone can reserve CNG or auto-rickshaw which are also available for a more direct route.
I found 3 reasons to visit this heritage site:
- Architectural Beauty: The estate's intricate designs and structures offer a glimpse into the opulence of the jamindar era.
- Cultural Insight: Explore temples and mausoleums that reflect the religious and social practices of that particular time.
- Scenic Surroundings: The lush gardens and serene ponds provide a peaceful retreat for visitors.
The estate derives its name from the village of Lakutia, where it is situated. The Roy family's influence in the area led to the estate being commonly referred to as Lakutia Jamindar Bari.
Today, while parts of the estate are under the supervision of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), efforts to preserve its historical essence continue. A visit to Lakutia Jamindar Bari offers a unique journey through time, capturing the essence of Bangladesh's rich heritage.
