It is considered largest lake in the southern Bangladesh encompassing about 27 acres of waterbody and a total area of 45.42 acres.
In 1780, King Shiva Narayan of Chandradwip Pargana commissioned the excavation of this vast lake to address the local water shortage problem. He named it "Durga Sagar" in honor of his mother Durga Debi. The term "Sagar" meaning sea, reflects the lake's gigantic size.
Durga Sagar is easily accessible from Barisal city. Tourists can take a bus from the Nathullabad Bus Terminal towards Banaripara and go directly at the lake's entrance. Alternatively, anyone can rent auto-rickshaws, CNGs, or private vehicles to reach the site within 30–45 minutes.
There are 4 major reasons, why should a person visit this lake:
- Scenic Beauty: Surrounded by coconut, betel nut and mahogany trees, the lake offers a calm and serene environment.
- Bird Sanctuary: During winter, the lake becomes a haven for migratory birds, which includes cranes and sandpipers
- Cultural Significance: The lake holds religious importance for Hindu devotees, especially during the Bengali month 'Chaitra'.
- Recreational Spot: Ideal for picnics, leisurely walks and nature photography.
Managed by the Barisal district administration, Durga Sagar remains a testament to the region's rich history and natural beauty. Whether you're a history enthusiast, nature lover or seeking a peaceful retreat; Durga Sagar offers a memorable experience.
